Q: Why did you choose a hip hop festival as your first comeback stage instead of a concert or a TV show?
Jay: Lupe Fiasco will perform tonight. So will Tiger JK. I wanted to be on the same stage with them. But I’m worried about my cough, which hasn’t gone away for a month and I might cough while singing even though I won’t be dancing. I went to the hospital and they think it’s caused by the smog used during the movie shoot. They just told me to drink a lot of water and take the medicine. (laugh) But it doesn’t get any better.
“I wouldn’t want to come back if it wasn’t for the fans.”
Q: This will be your first stage as a solo artist. How would the stage choreography be different from what you showed as a group?
Jay: This time I won’t dance at all while singing. I think it’ll be weird to dance to the song ‘Count on Me.’ And there’s this song called ‘Bestie’ which lyrics were written by me and melody was made by my friend. I’m going to sing that song. And I felt I should also dance so I will do a short b-boying performance with other b-boys.
Q: You’re now beginning your full-scale activities after releasing the remake of ‘Nothing on you’ by B.O.B. I guess you have expectations or pressures about the outcomes.
Jay: Honestly, I’ve never had a big expectation at all. I had no pressures, either. I had uploaded ‘Nothing on you’ onto YouTube and many people liked it. So Warner Music Asia contacted me to ask me if I want to do it and I agreed because I like B.O.B. very much. I’m thankful to my fans for liking it so much.
Q: Didn’t you have tough times while you were in the States?
Jay: I felt bad about the people around me going through hard times. I felt alright because I thought opportunities would come again. But the people around me were suffering a lot and that made me feel very bad. I never had a specific plan on when to go back or anything like that. I just let it flow. I received an offer from
Q: But then you made a contract in Korea and began your activities. What made you decide to do that?
Jay: Frankly, I think it’d be harder to succeed if it was only for the success itself. I’m just thankful to my fans. So I wanted to give them positive influence in any way I can. I wouldn’t want to come back if it wasn’t for my fans. I do my activities to pay back their love because fans wanted to see me back on the stage.
Q: In that perspective, aren’t you worried about your fans boycotting your former management company? Jay: I feel very bad about that. I don’t want to see them hate someone else in order to like me. I just want everyone to get along and I don’t like people hate each other or say bad words to each other. I wish my fans calm down a little, (laugh) and have a good relationship with one another. I feel very bad whenever I see fans fight, thinking it’s all because of me. I believe life is too short to live with bad feelings. So I’d like to tell them let’s always think positive, it’ll turn out good in the end when things look bad and the time will heal everything. I’d like to pass these thoughts to more people.
Q: Why do you think fans love you so much? Jay: Uh…. (laugh) I have lots of noona fans. I think they feel pity for me so they like me with the heart of a mother. The desire to comfort and protect me like a mom? (laugh)
Q: As you do more activities, you will not only have your supporters but also get opinions from the haters. What do you think of that? Jay: I don’t pay too much attention to those things. They don’t know me in person. I try not to care much about their bad words and negative views towards me. I think I can just try my best in what I do. And I feel I should just be good to the people around me, treat my fans very well, try to help many people and give positive influence and such.
Q: Becayse you’re uptight?
Jay: Yes.
